Hawkins' safety valve (code SV) for Hawkins pressure cookers from 1.5 to 14 litre: the Classic, all Contura, Hevibase, Stainless Steel, Stainless Steel Contura, Miss Mary and Ventura, and the Bigboy 14 litre.
It is the back-up to the whistle. Its metal centre melts (fuses) and lets the steam out if the pressure goes too high. Hawkins gives the usual causes: the cooker boiled dry, the vent tube was blocked, the flame was wider than the base, or the heat stayed high after full pressure. If yours has fused, turn off the heat, let the cooker cool, clean the vent tube and fit a new valve before you cook again.
Check before you order: the Bigboy 18 and 22 litre take the SVBB valve, and Futura cookers take Futura valves. Hawkins changes it with a 19 mm spanner and says never to reuse the old nut, retainer or washer.
