It sits on the vent tube. When the cooker reaches working pressure the weight lifts and lets steam out: that is the whistle. Replace it when the whistle does not come or comes very late, steam escapes all the time, or the weight is dented, loose or lost.
Check before you order: 2005 and later Classic, Contura, Hevibase and Ventura cookers take the VW05 pressure regulator, which has a black band. If a cooker keeps heating without whistling, turn off the flame, let it cool fully, and do not force the lid open.
